Overlook Hospital Palliative Care Program
Overlook Hospital is a 400-bed community teaching hospital in Summit, NJ, which provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services and programs. The hospital has a strong Bioethics Committee and has been an active leader in New Jersey for the advancement of programs on improving end-of-life care. A hospital-wide palliative care program has been operational for more than four years during which time more than 500 nurses and hospital staff have received 12 hours of training in the fundamentals of palliative care. It is the hospital’s philosophy and belief that this training promotes excellence in care for all patients. In addition, a palliative care consultation service has been developed and the “Pain as the Fifth Vital Sign” practice has been instituted. Inpatient services include bioethics consultations, palliative care team consultations, pastoral care services and social work services. Informational brochures and newsletters, as well as a Family Caregivers Resource Directory (available in January, 2005) are available, free of charge.
